The Council issues an annual Women's Agenda, representing mutual concern for issues affecting women and their families. While organizational missions and member priorities direct the specific activities of individual groups, no participating organization works against any part of the Agenda. The Council, through its individual members and task forces, works with the Congress, federal policy makers, state coalitions, the media, and candidates from both political parties to promote equality and self sufficiency for women. Passage of the Equal Rights Amendment is a fundamental goal of the Council. Candidates and policy makers must address the key issues affecting the future health and economic well-being of women and their families. The Council of President calls for leadership and action on the following issues, underscoring the need to reorder federal budget priorities to invest in human needs. o Civil rights, including the elimination of all institutional forms of discrimination as well as strengthening, expansion, and enforcement of civil rights laws to secure legal equality; o Family and medical leave; Universal health care, including prevention services, long term care, and expanded research on women's health issues; o Reproductive rights without regard to income, age, and marital status; o Employment opportunities including job training, pay equity, and an increased minimum wage; o Economic equity in Social Security, pensions, and insurance; Educational equity for women and girls; o Elimination of violence against women; Economic justice, recognizing the disproportionate impact of poverty, hunger, and homelessness on women and children; o Tax fairness and deficit reduction that encourages economic development without denying those in need; o Expansion of business and entrepreneurial opportunities for women; and o Economic recognition, recompense, and respite for caregivers.
