Anna G. Eshoo California-14th District Anna Eshoo represents California's 14th Congressional District which encompasses portions of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and includes the high tech center, "Silicon Valley", Stanford University, NASA Ames Research Center, and some of California's most beautiful coastline. Upon election to Congress in 1992, Anna Eshoo was elected Regional WHIP for Northern California. She is a member of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee and the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. ACCOMPLISHMENTS Throughout her distinguished career in public service, Anna Eshoo has been at the forefront of leading issues having served as a Member of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors for ten years prior to her election to Congress. In health care, Anna Eshoo led the fight for expanded peri-natal services and medicaid reform in San Mateo County. She was responsible for securing funds for California's first free-standing nursing facility for AIDS patients and was instrumental in increasing 15-fold the AIDS funding in San Mateo County. Anna Eshoo also served as Chair of the San Mateo County General Hospital Board of Directors. Anna Eshoo's commitment to environmental protection is evident in her many accomplishments in this area. She has been a steadfast advocate for coastal protection, leading the battle against both coastal development and off-shore drilling. She prevented dredge dumping off the San Mateo coast by the Port of Oakland and carried legislation requiring double containment of toxics stored underground. In addition, Anna Eshoo served as a member of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission and served as Chair of the bay Area Quality Management District. Her advocacy on behalf of women and children has won national recognition. She instituted a Sexual Harassment Orientation Program for all San Mateo County employees and established a task force to compile data on violence against women. Anna Eshoo also forged a labor-community-airline alliance to provide child care for their workers. In addition she is co-founder of the Women's Hall of Fame. BACKGROUND Anna Eshoo is a 26 year resident of the 14th District and currently resides in Atherton, California. She has two children: Karen, who is 24; and Paul, who is 22. She served on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors for 10 years and also served as President of the Board. She was elected Democratic National Committeewoman in 1980, and was the first woman Chair of the San Mateo County Democratic Party. In 1981, she served on the Party's National Commission on Presidential Nomination.
