Using CARL UnCover to Access Women's Studies Information ALA Midwinter 1994 ACRL - Women's Studies Section Discussion Group compiled by: Jill Morrissey Homer Babbidge Library University of Connecticut Storrs, CT 06269-1005 hblad129@uconnvm.uconn.edu The ever-increasing access to information provides an incredible opportunity for librarians to be the main link between patrons and these resources. This access is of special benefit to Women's Studies scholars because the primary sources of specialized information, Women's Studies Abstracts and Studies on Women Abstracts, are not available online. Although the source that indexes the most Women?s Studies journals, Sociological Abstracts, is available online, the second most comprehensive source, Alternative Press Index, is not. Clearly, a major problem faced by most Women's Studies scholars is lack of online access to indexing Women's Studies journals. A solution to this problem is to use the Internet, specifically, the CARL database, since most of the university community has computer/mail accounts that provide telnet access. Because CARL includes major Women's Studies journals (list included), it should become a part of librarians' outreach services to show that this database exists and how to use it. This presentation/workshop will focus on how and when to use CARL, which journals are indexed, and how to formulate effective search strategies. Searching on CARL is not as straightforward as most databases, and the interdisciplinary aspect of Women's Studies and its use of many terms (for example, women, feminism, feminist, gender) makes it even more difficult. What is CARL UnCover? It is a database that includes the table of contents of almost every journal (!) since Fall 1988, which also allows for searching the titles and authors. Some articles include abstracts. An area of special application is Women' Studies, since there are no databases /CD-ROMs for this subject. **A list of the periodicals included in CARL UnCover is available by contacting them at (303) 758-3030 What to do: telnet to uncover.carl.org choose 5 (for VT100) choose 1 (for UnCover) Main Menu N for author (Name) searching (quicksearch is //n name) example: Molly Ivins W for subject (Word) searching (quicksearch is //w word[s]) example: feminis* media example: Naomi Wolf B to Browse the table of contents (quicksearch is //t title) example: Ms. Quicksearch example: //n molly ivins //t mother jones //w women legal Search tips: -truncation is a * -type H to see a review of your searches -to exit, type //exit Women's Studies Journals on CARL UnCover: Affilia Ahfad Journal of Women and Change Atlantis Australian Feminist Studies Belles Lettres Berkeley Women's Law Journal Canadian Journal of Women and the Law Canadian Women's Studies Cardozo Women's Law Journal Circles: the Buffalo Women's Journal of Law Columbia Journal of Gender and Law Creative Woman Differences Equal Opportunities Review Feminisms Feminist Art News Feminist Issues Feminist Legal Studies Feminist Review Feminist Studies Feminist Teacher Frontiers: a Journal of Women's Studies Gender and Education Gender and History Gender and Society Genders Harvard Women's Law Journal Hasting's Women's Law Journal Health Care for Women International Hecate Heresies Hot Wire Hypatia ISIS International Women's Book Series Issues in Reproductive and Genetic Engineering Journal of Feminist Family Therapy Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion Journal of Women and Aging Journal of Women's History Legacy: a Journal of 19th century women writers Lilith Manushi Ms. NWSA Journal Psychology of Women Quarterly Resources for Feminist Research SAGE: a Scholarly Journal on Black Women Samya Shakti Sex Roles SIGNS: Journal of Women in Culture and Society Texas Journal of Women and the Law Tulsa Studies in Women's Literature Turn-of-the-Century Women UCLA Women's Law Journal Wisconsin Women's Law Journal Woman CPA Woman Engineer Woman of Power Woman's Art Journal Women Women: a Cultural Review Women & Criminal Justice Women and Environments Women & Health Women and Language Women & Literature Women and Revolution Women & Politics Women & Therapy Women Artists News Women in Action Women Lawyer's Journal Women of China Women of Power Women of Vietnam Women's Health Issues Women's Health Nursing Scan Women's Rights Law Reporter Women's Sports and Fitness Women's Studies Women's Studies Abstracts Women's Studies in Communication Women's Studies International Forum Women's Studies Quarterly
