THE FOURTH BIENNIAL MEETING OF THE

Society of Early Americanists

The Society of Early Americanists will hold its Fourth Biennial Conference 31 March-2 April 2005 at the Alexandria Radisson Hotel, located on the edge of the historic district of Old Town Alexandria, VA, and just across the Potomac River from Washington DC. The Radisson provides complimentary shuttle service to and from Reagan National Airport, which is only two miles away, as well as round-trip shuttle to the DC Metro subway system, the nearest station (Braddock Road) being one mile away. The Program Committee has reserved a block of rooms for a special conference rate of $139.00 single/double occupancy. For information on hotel reservations, visit the Accommodations page.

The Program includes 50 panels and two keynote events--a "Colloquy with Cathy Davidson (Duke University) on Revolution and the Word: twenty years along," and a plenary address by Joseph Roach (Yale University) (title: "Outlaw Glamour: Time Pirates of the Caribbean").

Apart from the regular sessions and keynote events, the conference includes two receptions, one at the Radisson Hotel and another at Gadsby's Tavern Museum, an eighteenth-century tavern/hotel in the historic disctrict of Old Town Alexandria, as well as an optional "Women's Caucus Breakfast" (see registration). The program committee has compiled several optional Saturday evening events around the Washington DC area that are accessible by Metro. Also, participants might be interesetd in the Gilbert Stuart exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, which opens on 27 March. Additionally, the Washington DC area offers a host of opportunities for exploration easily accessible by public transportation, including the National Mall monuments, the National Archives, the Smithsonian museums and galleries, the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespearean Library, J. F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Old Georgetown, Mt. Vernon (George Washington's estate, 10 miles away), and a wide variety of restaurants. Finally, Washington DC will celebrate the National Cherry Blossom Festival from March 26-April 10.
